Abstract
The clinical observation has been made on 78 cases of Reye¢¥s syndrome who were admitted to pediatric ward of St. Vincent hospital during 4 years from January 1981 to December 1984.
The following results were obtained. Male to female ratio was 1:1.1. The highest incidence was shown under lyr 51 cases(65.4%). The most common antecedent illness was U.R.I. (84.6%) followed by diarrhea, viral exanthem, gingivostomatitis in small number of cases.
Clinical manifestations showed altered consciousness (100.0%), vomiting(91.0%), tachypnea (47.4%), hepatomegaly(37.2%), fever(19.2%), convulsion(15.4%), diarrhea (10.3%), hematemesis(2.6%). According to Lovejoy¢¥s classfication on admission the case mortality showed 30. 0% in stage III, 62. 5% in stage IV, 100.0% in stage V. The higher the stage, the higher the mortality.
Biochemical laboratory data on admission showed that death occurred more frequently in patients with high blood ammonia level over 300/dl and low blood sugar level under 50mg/dl(p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between patient¢¥s mortality and level of SGOT, SGPT, LDH, CPK.
Average mortality was 21.8%
